Meet Dallas Animal Services volunteer extraordinaire, Kristy.

What initially inspired you to start volunteering/fostering with DAS?
I started volunteering during the pandemic. This gave me extra time with dogs without the full commitment of a second dog.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement from your time as a volunteer/foster?
One of my all-time favorite dogs was a pittie named Willard. He was scared of his wobbly bed, so he became a blanket king and loved to “make biscuits” as he sucked on his blanket. A few days later he wasn’t eating his food, and the staff were concerned he was sick. Turns out his bed was just in the way of his food bowl! We moved his bed, and he immediately gobbled up his lunch. It’s so heartwarming to see how much love and concern the DAS team has for every animal.

What motivates you to continue volunteering/fostering and giving back to the community?
The need at DAS is so big. Every time I leave the shelter, I feel I made a difference. Even if I just sit in a kennel with a dog for a few minutes I can see their mood get a little brighter.
How has volunteering/fostering impacted your life personally or professionally?
New friends that like talking about dogs as much as me and helping me become the leader for philanthropy in our office.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering volunteering/fostering but hasn't taken the leap yet?
Volunteering at DAS is so flexible! There are so many types of shifts and time-slots. People are willing to help and show you the ropes.
Can you tell us about a project or initiative you're currently working on as a volunteer?
My current focus is on “room 10” of DAS. This is the furthest room away from the entrance. I like to showcase those dogs to make sure they get some extra exposure in case potential adopters don’t walk all the way back. It’s a great crew!
What do you enjoy most about being a part of DAS volunteer/foster community?
I love spending time with a nervous pup over several visits and see them get more and more comfortable.

How do you balance your volunteer/foster commitments with other aspects of your life?
It can be difficult at times to find the right balance of information I take in. There are some tough stories and situations. If I recognize I’m getting a little down I take a week off from volunteering, spend extra cuddle time with my pup, and only pay attention to the many positive outcomes at DAS.
What are your future goals or aspirations related to volunteering/fostering?
I want to see room 10 have the best outcomes of the shelter!
