Celebrating Taylor, shelter animal hero! šŸ¾

Friends of DAS

1. What initially inspired you to start volunteering/fostering with DAS?

I rescued two dogs of my own, and they were the best additions to my life. That inspired me to get involved and help more dogs find their forever homes. My fostering journey started when I took a shelter dog on a daycation to complete my non-canine handling hoursā€”I just couldnā€™t bring her back! And the rest is history.

2. Can you share a memorable experience or achievement from your time as a volunteer/foster?

One of the most rewarding parts of fostering is hearing from adopters. Seeing updates on dogs Iā€™ve fostered and watching them thrive in their forever homes is incredibly fulfilling. Their personalities truly shine once theyā€™re settled!

3. What motivates you to continue volunteering/fostering and giving back to the community?

For me, itā€™s about being a voice for the voiceless. Advocating for these dogs and helping them find positive outcomes is so rewarding. Plus, the love and gratitude they give back is priceless.

4. How has volunteering/fostering impacted your life personally or professionally?

Fostering has given me a strong sense of purpose and connected me with an amazing community of like-minded people. Through volunteering, Iā€™ve helped increase positive outcomes at the shelter and made lifelong friends along the way.

5. What advice would you give to someone who is considering volunteering/fostering but hasnā€™t taken the leap yet?

If someone is hesitant to get involved, Iā€™d ask whatā€™s holding them back. If itā€™s time, you can commit as much or as little as you want. If itā€™s fear, there are experienced volunteers ready to help. If itā€™s feeling overwhelmed by the number of animals in need, rememberā€”helping even one makes a difference! You might never feel ā€œready,ā€ but once you start, youā€™ll learn and grow with the support of an incredible community.

6. What do you enjoy most about being a part of the DAS volunteer/foster program?

I love spending time with the dogs, but I also appreciate the support from the foster team and fellow volunteers. Rescue work takes a village, and Iā€™m grateful for all the advice and encouragement along the way.

7. How do you balance your volunteer/foster commitments with other aspects of your life?

Balancing volunteering with personal time is important. Sometimes, I bring a foster dog along when I go out, but I also remind myself that itā€™s okay to take breaks. Every hour spent volunteering makes a difference, and I canā€™t help the dogs if I donā€™t take care of myself too!

8. What are your future goals or aspirations related to volunteering/fostering?

Looking ahead, Iā€™d love to take on more medical cases and become a safe landing spot for dogs with higher needs. I also hope to get trained to lead orientation or canine handling for new volunteersā€”shoutout to Liz and Caroline for making my experience so welcoming!
