1. What initially inspired you to start volunteering/fostering with DAS?
I rescued two dogs of my own, and they were the best additions to my life. That inspired me to get involved and help more dogs find their forever homes. My fostering journey started when I took a shelter dog on a daycation to complete my non-canine handling hoursāI just couldnāt bring her back! And the rest is history.
2. Can you share a memorable experience or achievement from your time as a volunteer/foster?
One of the most rewarding parts of fostering is hearing from adopters. Seeing updates on dogs Iāve fostered and watching them thrive in their forever homes is incredibly fulfilling. Their personalities truly shine once theyāre settled!

3. What motivates you to continue volunteering/fostering and giving back to the community?
For me, itās about being a voice for the voiceless. Advocating for these dogs and helping them find positive outcomes is so rewarding. Plus, the love and gratitude they give back is priceless.
4. How has volunteering/fostering impacted your life personally or professionally?
Fostering has given me a strong sense of purpose and connected me with an amazing community of like-minded people. Through volunteering, Iāve helped increase positive outcomes at the shelter and made lifelong friends along the way.
5. What advice would you give to someone who is considering volunteering/fostering but hasnāt taken the leap yet?
If someone is hesitant to get involved, Iād ask whatās holding them back. If itās time, you can commit as much or as little as you want. If itās fear, there are experienced volunteers ready to help. If itās feeling overwhelmed by the number of animals in need, rememberāhelping even one makes a difference! You might never feel āready,ā but once you start, youāll learn and grow with the support of an incredible community.

6. What do you enjoy most about being a part of the DAS volunteer/foster program?
I love spending time with the dogs, but I also appreciate the support from the foster team and fellow volunteers. Rescue work takes a village, and Iām grateful for all the advice and encouragement along the way.
7. How do you balance your volunteer/foster commitments with other aspects of your life?
Balancing volunteering with personal time is important. Sometimes, I bring a foster dog along when I go out, but I also remind myself that itās okay to take breaks. Every hour spent volunteering makes a difference, and I canāt help the dogs if I donāt take care of myself too!
8. What are your future goals or aspirations related to volunteering/fostering?
Looking ahead, Iād love to take on more medical cases and become a safe landing spot for dogs with higher needs. I also hope to get trained to lead orientation or canine handling for new volunteersāshoutout to Liz and Caroline for making my experience so welcoming!
