The City of Dallas recently released its proposed budget. As you may know, interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert called for every city department to cut its budget by at least six percent (6%).
Thankfully, the proposed budget for Dallas Animal Services (DAS) does not include a 6% cut, but we believe additional funding and support is necessary to keep the aging facility functioning for optimal lifesaving.
The current shelter was built in 2006, when lifesaving was not a priority. It does not include sufficient space for the number of animals entering the shelter, or the many people caring for them. It does not have adequate parking for employees, volunteers, and customers. It does not have functional outdoor space for onsite dog walking.
Additionally, in the summer months there are constant issues with keeping the air conditioning/HVAC system working properly. This is incredibly important given that there are living animals in the shelter, all of whom deserve compassionate care.
